Grandma’s Elusive Barnyard Cats
These felines were not exactly friendly
My Grandma loved her cats. They were sneaky creatures slinking and hiding around and about — not drawing any attention to themselves. They were untouchable. I yearned to make friends with them but when cornered, these elusive felines hissed and spat — STAY AWAY! (And, so I did.)
They came in every color and pattern and they beautifully decorated the yard.
The cattle’s grain and feed was stored in the barn, where they were milked, and it attracted pesky rodents. The rodents attracted the cats. And so it went — the cats were farm workers; they earned their keep, instinctively doing their job.
When meals at the farmhouse were completed and cleaned up, an old pie pan was filled with the scraps and scrapings. The cats knew when to meet Grandma under the designated spot below the clothes line. What a sight to see! It was as if Grandma’s clicking spoon was a magical wand! Noses, then bodies, then swishing tails appeared out of the cracks and crevices of the yard and barn and field. Miraculously and silently, the cats swiftly appeared…
